In honor of the great Tom Petty, taken from us too soon, this is a re-issue of the FM soundtrack podcast.

Let Eric take you on a musical trip back to 1978 where the grooves were languid, the organs prominent, and there was no static at all.

TP talk, brief as it is, starts at 15:40

Note: A hard drive failure has caused a delay in releasing the Spectre episode which is also why FM gets a re-release today.  You'll be hearing the Spectre episode next week on schedule.

Lesson for today:  Tell you family and friends how much they mean to you and back up your data!!!

License to Kill is the worst Bond so far. There are plenty of little good things but overall it’s a mess. In a surprise twist, Drew is its biggest defender. Along the way the brothers discuss Michael Keaton’s Batman, Robert Davi, and Benicio Del Toro.

Apocalypse Now is Eric’s favorite movie. Brothers J and Drew are somewhat less impressed but agree it’s a classic.

Along the way they discuss The Doors, Drew’s less than admirable but quite successful academic career, Dr Gene Scott, and The Lost City of Z, The Handmaiden, Stranger Things, The Accountant, Lost Souls, and Lost In La Mancha.

They also discuss true crime podcasts such as: My Favorite Murder; Sword and Scale; All Killa No Filla; Astonishing Legends; Generation Why; and Death, Sex & Money.

Driving Miss Daisy is a charming movie with very little action and not a lot of dialogue but plenty of tension and fantastic acting.  Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy, and Dan Ackroyd all do stellar work.  Brother J expresses his love for composer Hans Zimmer.

They also discuss Good Times; Passengers; Winter’s Bone; Rango; Better Call Saul, the Americans, and Rosie Perez’s masterworks: White Men Can’t Jump, Untamed Heart, Fearless, and Dancing With the Devil.

In housekeeping they discuss Eric’s conspiracy theories, United Airlines, and Bill O’Reilly. Brother J revives an old segment “toenail talk,” and Drew and Eric yes-and’s into gross true stories.

Brother J has a rant about Apple Music and teaches us about Pandora while introducing us to Hugo’s 99 Problems. Brother J introduces us of Siafu. Check out the video link and good luck sleeping.

No sparkly vampires here, instead we get Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, and Gene Hackman in a fun noir thriller.

The supporting cast is also formidable: Stockard Channing, James Garner, Reese Witherspoon, Live Schreiber, Giancarlo Esposito, Margo Martindale, John Spencer, and M. Emmet Walsh.

Note: This Eric and Drew only episode was recorded in December 2015 and inserted into the calendar this week due to minor illness. It’s also a bite sized ep but hey, sometimes that happens. We’ll be back next week with a full-on three bro pod.

Roger Moore’s last Bond.   Bro J’s fave, Drew thinks it lets Roger down, but Eric is neither shaken nor stirred.  They all love Roger Moore though.

Discussed during Bond: the Cold War, Iman vs Grace Jones, Eric questions Drew’s knowledge (at his peril), bestiality, CPAP, Sesame Street pratfalls, the DAK catalog, equine brucellosis, Andrew Stevens, Code Red (TV show), and 2010’s Mongolian Death Worm.

The untimely death of Bill Paxton caused the Bros to tackle U-571, a light-weight WWII submarine movie.

The film isn’t great but the resulting discussion was fun.

Bill Paxton filmography starts at 28:30

Topics include: watching a movie in a theater by oneself, how a rousing score changes your movie, the historical accuracy of Jon Bon Jovi movies, 80’s New Wave music, the movie Hardware, the Academy Awards gaffe, new cars, daddy’s movie request, and the evils of Comcast

The brothers discuss the spectrum of actors which include: Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Shia LaBeouf, Crispin Glover, James Franco, and Jared Leto.

Housekeeping begins at 1:00:00, during which they discuss: 1973’s The Exorcist, 1996’s Thesis, stubborn males, concussions, 2016’s Train to Busan, 2015’s Spotlight, 2015’s The Big Short, the 2017 TV series Santa Clarita Diet, and bathroom percussion.

Alaskan escapes kidnappers in Mexico

Posted: Tuesday, October 10, 2006 By The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE - An Anchorage woman kidnapped from a beach home in Mexico escaped by slipping into a dark jungle and walking to a town. Tammy Griffin, 46, a regional manager for The Hotel Group, slashed her feet during her flight but was not seriously hurt, her three children said Sunday.

The 5-foot-4, 120-pound Griffin is a grandmother and big game hunter in Alaska. She phoned her children Saturday from Mexico to tell them what happened, they told the Anchorage Daily News.

They had not had time to worry - she escaped before they knew she had been kidnapped from a beach home near Zihuatanejo, a popular tourist destination on Mexico's west coast.

She escaped using survival savvy learned from growing up in Alaska and hunting, her family said. She has killed at least one black bear and several moose and deer, her son said. "She's a survivor. She's tough as hell," said Taylor Tanner, 20, at the family's home in East Anchorage.

Tammy Griffin and her husband, Mike, 52, travel often to Mexico. The ordeal began Thursday night at about 8 p.m., said Amanda Aguilar, 28, of Eagle River, Griffin's oldest child. Several kidnappers and perhaps as many as five had robbed a couple in a home near the Griffin's residence. They walked that couple at gunpoint to the Griffin's vacation home, Aguilar said.

Mike Griffin walked outside and the men thrust rifles in his face, ordered him in the house and struck him, Aguilar said. Tammy Griffin was asleep in a bedroom. Griffin told KTUU-TV that she heard her husband yell that they were being robbed. A gunman ordered her into the living room, pointed a gun at Mike Griffin's head, tied him up and blindfolded him.

The men grabbed cash, guns, a laptop computer, a DVD player, tools, cash and other items of value. They said they did not have enough and would take Griffin for ransom, she said.

Leaving a cell phone behind for Mike Griffin to arrange a ransom, they drove off in the Griffin's rental car. The kidnappers met up with other men, left the car and drove to a remote area in the mountains about 45 minutes away. After walking deeper into the jungle, they gave Tammy Griffin a mat and rested on the jungle floor.

There were as many as seven men in all and they took turns watching her. Her children said she remained submissive but confident, refusing to cry. "She just did what they asked her to do, which is why they never tied her up," Aguilar said. "They figured a petite redheaded white girl isn't going to run into the jungle."

They did not blindfold her, and Griffin interpreted that as a sign they were planning to kill her. "She knew running was her best chance of survival," Tanner said.

About 3 a.m., when her guard fell asleep, Tammy quietly walked away, Aguilar said. In her escape, wearing flip-flop sandals, she crashed through brush and spider webs, stopping to listen often but never hearing pursuers, Aguilar said.

She found a creek and followed it, knowing it would flow to the coast and coastal highway. After the sun came up, she reached a town and walked into a small store. The shop owners gave her a calling card to dial police, Aguilar said

Mike Griffin, who owns Aurora Construction services, was not planning to return to Anchorage for a month. He's building onto the couple's vacation home, Aguilar said. Tammy, who is staying with friends, will stick around for another week to work with the U.S. embassy and local officials to find her abductors.

NIACW 187 Network

In the age of infotainment and President Trump, a film like Network might not seem so satirical but in 1976 it was the darkest of satires and a damning criticism of “modern” journalism.

It’s one of Brother E’s favorite films but Brother J thought it didn’t translate to a modern audience.

We have a fun discussion about media luminaries such as: Glenn Beck, Christine O’Donnell, Bill Maher, Dan Savage, Michael Savage, Alex Jones, Steve Bannon, President Trump, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Shepard Smith, Nancy Grace, and Jenny Jones. Brother J shares a theory on framing beach scenes.

In housekeeping we discuss: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Trolls, Inside Out, The Butterfly Effect, Asylum Blackout, Perkins 14, and Darling.

NIACW 186 Grosse Pointe Blank

Grosse Pointe Blank is full of great actors quipping fun lines amidst solid action sequences set to late 80’s music. What’s not to love?

Correction: Eric mentions that the director, George Armitage, also directed 1971’s “Private Duty Nurses,” which Eric described as a “Nudie Cutie” movie. Upon further review it is probably better described as a “Sexploitation” movie.

In housekeeping we discuss Rogue One, The Accountant, House of 1000 Corpses, Dawn of the Dead, and Exorcist III. We also recommend the podcasts: “Monster Party” and “In the Dark.”

NIACW 185 Octopussy

Octopussy proves that one can forgive a lot of goofiness if the pacing is fast enough. It has clowns, twins, an all-girl ninja force, a Faberge egg, elephants, a tiger, a submarine that looks like a crocodile, a nuclear bomb, and a crazy Russian general but it’s still fairly grounded to reality.

Also: true elevator horror story

Orlando Sentinel:

Elevator Crushes Woman Caught Between Floors

October 1, 1991 ANCHORAGE, ALASKA —

A woman was crushed in a parking garage elevator as fellow passengers tried to save her. The woman was caught Sunday between floors of the J.C. Penney Co. parking garage elevator. She was getting on when the elevator started going up and she slipped, police said. ''As she stepped on the elevator, it suddenly started to go up,'' police Lt. Bill Gaither said. ''There was no one standing at the control panel, and the doors stayed open.'' The woman dangled half on and half off the elevator and was crushed as five other passengers frantically pressed buttons to save her, Gaither said.

NIACW 183 The Big Lebowski

Another Coen Brothers movie that Brothers E and J love but Drew dislikes intensely, the Big Lebowski is chock full of quotables.

This episode has a fair amount of meandering so be prepared. We discuss, among other things, cutting the cable cord and Carrie Fisher’s virginity.

Housekeeping starts at 1:15:00

The Big Lebowski “Fuck” count:

260 “fuck”s, 117 minutes of movie. 2.22 fucks per minute

Compare to Wolf of Wall Street:

569 fucks in 180 minutes for a 3.16 fucks per minute which is the top of mainstream films.

Goodwill Hunting and Scarface have 1.22 and 1.21 fucks per minute

The Grey has 1.3 fucks per minute (and is a Christian film, right?)
