License to Kill is the worst Bond so far. There are plenty of little good things but overall it’s a mess. In a surprise twist, Drew is its biggest defender. Along the way the brothers discuss Michael Keaton’s Batman, Robert Davi, and Benicio Del Toro.

Apocalypse Now is Eric’s favorite movie. Brothers J and Drew are somewhat less impressed but agree it’s a classic.

Along the way they discuss The Doors, Drew’s less than admirable but quite successful academic career, Dr Gene Scott, and The Lost City of Z, The Handmaiden, Stranger Things, The Accountant, Lost Souls, and Lost In La Mancha.

They also discuss true crime podcasts such as: My Favorite Murder; Sword and Scale; All Killa No Filla; Astonishing Legends; Generation Why; and Death, Sex & Money.

Driving Miss Daisy is a charming movie with very little action and not a lot of dialogue but plenty of tension and fantastic acting.  Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy, and Dan Ackroyd all do stellar work.  Brother J expresses his love for composer Hans Zimmer.

They also discuss Good Times; Passengers; Winter’s Bone; Rango; Better Call Saul, the Americans, and Rosie Perez’s masterworks: White Men Can’t Jump, Untamed Heart, Fearless, and Dancing With the Devil.

In housekeeping they discuss Eric’s conspiracy theories, United Airlines, and Bill O’Reilly. Brother J revives an old segment “toenail talk,” and Drew and Eric yes-and’s into gross true stories.

Brother J has a rant about Apple Music and teaches us about Pandora while introducing us to Hugo’s 99 Problems. Brother J introduces us of Siafu. Check out the video link and good luck sleeping.

No sparkly vampires here, instead we get Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, and Gene Hackman in a fun noir thriller.

The supporting cast is also formidable: Stockard Channing, James Garner, Reese Witherspoon, Live Schreiber, Giancarlo Esposito, Margo Martindale, John Spencer, and M. Emmet Walsh.

Note: This Eric and Drew only episode was recorded in December 2015 and inserted into the calendar this week due to minor illness. It’s also a bite sized ep but hey, sometimes that happens. We’ll be back next week with a full-on three bro pod.

Roger Moore’s last Bond.   Bro J’s fave, Drew thinks it lets Roger down, but Eric is neither shaken nor stirred.  They all love Roger Moore though.

Discussed during Bond: the Cold War, Iman vs Grace Jones, Eric questions Drew’s knowledge (at his peril), bestiality, CPAP, Sesame Street pratfalls, the DAK catalog, equine brucellosis, Andrew Stevens, Code Red (TV show), and 2010’s Mongolian Death Worm.

The untimely death of Bill Paxton caused the Bros to tackle U-571, a light-weight WWII submarine movie.

The film isn’t great but the resulting discussion was fun.

Bill Paxton filmography starts at 28:30

Topics include: watching a movie in a theater by oneself, how a rousing score changes your movie, the historical accuracy of Jon Bon Jovi movies, 80’s New Wave music, the movie Hardware, the Academy Awards gaffe, new cars, daddy’s movie request, and the evils of Comcast

The brothers discuss the spectrum of actors which include: Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Shia LaBeouf, Crispin Glover, James Franco, and Jared Leto.

Housekeeping begins at 1:00:00, during which they discuss: 1973’s The Exorcist, 1996’s Thesis, stubborn males, concussions, 2016’s Train to Busan, 2015’s Spotlight, 2015’s The Big Short, the 2017 TV series Santa Clarita Diet, and bathroom percussion.

Alaskan escapes kidnappers in Mexico

Posted: Tuesday, October 10, 2006 By The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE - An Anchorage woman kidnapped from a beach home in Mexico escaped by slipping into a dark jungle and walking to a town. Tammy Griffin, 46, a regional manager for The Hotel Group, slashed her feet during her flight but was not seriously hurt, her three children said Sunday.

The 5-foot-4, 120-pound Griffin is a grandmother and big game hunter in Alaska. She phoned her children Saturday from Mexico to tell them what happened, they told the Anchorage Daily News.

They had not had time to worry - she escaped before they knew she had been kidnapped from a beach home near Zihuatanejo, a popular tourist destination on Mexico's west coast.

She escaped using survival savvy learned from growing up in Alaska and hunting, her family said. She has killed at least one black bear and several moose and deer, her son said. "She's a survivor. She's tough as hell," said Taylor Tanner, 20, at the family's home in East Anchorage.

Tammy Griffin and her husband, Mike, 52, travel often to Mexico. The ordeal began Thursday night at about 8 p.m., said Amanda Aguilar, 28, of Eagle River, Griffin's oldest child. Several kidnappers and perhaps as many as five had robbed a couple in a home near the Griffin's residence. They walked that couple at gunpoint to the Griffin's vacation home, Aguilar said.

Mike Griffin walked outside and the men thrust rifles in his face, ordered him in the house and struck him, Aguilar said. Tammy Griffin was asleep in a bedroom. Griffin told KTUU-TV that she heard her husband yell that they were being robbed. A gunman ordered her into the living room, pointed a gun at Mike Griffin's head, tied him up and blindfolded him.

The men grabbed cash, guns, a laptop computer, a DVD player, tools, cash and other items of value. They said they did not have enough and would take Griffin for ransom, she said.

Leaving a cell phone behind for Mike Griffin to arrange a ransom, they drove off in the Griffin's rental car. The kidnappers met up with other men, left the car and drove to a remote area in the mountains about 45 minutes away. After walking deeper into the jungle, they gave Tammy Griffin a mat and rested on the jungle floor.

There were as many as seven men in all and they took turns watching her. Her children said she remained submissive but confident, refusing to cry. "She just did what they asked her to do, which is why they never tied her up," Aguilar said. "They figured a petite redheaded white girl isn't going to run into the jungle."

They did not blindfold her, and Griffin interpreted that as a sign they were planning to kill her. "She knew running was her best chance of survival," Tanner said.

About 3 a.m., when her guard fell asleep, Tammy quietly walked away, Aguilar said. In her escape, wearing flip-flop sandals, she crashed through brush and spider webs, stopping to listen often but never hearing pursuers, Aguilar said.

She found a creek and followed it, knowing it would flow to the coast and coastal highway. After the sun came up, she reached a town and walked into a small store. The shop owners gave her a calling card to dial police, Aguilar said

Mike Griffin, who owns Aurora Construction services, was not planning to return to Anchorage for a month. He's building onto the couple's vacation home, Aguilar said. Tammy, who is staying with friends, will stick around for another week to work with the U.S. embassy and local officials to find her abductors.

NIACW 187 Network

In the age of infotainment and President Trump, a film like Network might not seem so satirical but in 1976 it was the darkest of satires and a damning criticism of “modern” journalism.

It’s one of Brother E’s favorite films but Brother J thought it didn’t translate to a modern audience.

We have a fun discussion about media luminaries such as: Glenn Beck, Christine O’Donnell, Bill Maher, Dan Savage, Michael Savage, Alex Jones, Steve Bannon, President Trump, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Shepard Smith, Nancy Grace, and Jenny Jones. Brother J shares a theory on framing beach scenes.

In housekeeping we discuss: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Trolls, Inside Out, The Butterfly Effect, Asylum Blackout, Perkins 14, and Darling.

NIACW 186 Grosse Pointe Blank

Grosse Pointe Blank is full of great actors quipping fun lines amidst solid action sequences set to late 80’s music. What’s not to love?

Correction: Eric mentions that the director, George Armitage, also directed 1971’s “Private Duty Nurses,” which Eric described as a “Nudie Cutie” movie. Upon further review it is probably better described as a “Sexploitation” movie.

In housekeeping we discuss Rogue One, The Accountant, House of 1000 Corpses, Dawn of the Dead, and Exorcist III. We also recommend the podcasts: “Monster Party” and “In the Dark.”

NIACW 185 Octopussy

Octopussy proves that one can forgive a lot of goofiness if the pacing is fast enough. It has clowns, twins, an all-girl ninja force, a Faberge egg, elephants, a tiger, a submarine that looks like a crocodile, a nuclear bomb, and a crazy Russian general but it’s still fairly grounded to reality.

Also: true elevator horror story

Orlando Sentinel:

Elevator Crushes Woman Caught Between Floors

October 1, 1991 ANCHORAGE, ALASKA —

A woman was crushed in a parking garage elevator as fellow passengers tried to save her. The woman was caught Sunday between floors of the J.C. Penney Co. parking garage elevator. She was getting on when the elevator started going up and she slipped, police said. ''As she stepped on the elevator, it suddenly started to go up,'' police Lt. Bill Gaither said. ''There was no one standing at the control panel, and the doors stayed open.'' The woman dangled half on and half off the elevator and was crushed as five other passengers frantically pressed buttons to save her, Gaither said.

NIACW 183 The Big Lebowski

Another Coen Brothers movie that Brothers E and J love but Drew dislikes intensely, the Big Lebowski is chock full of quotables.

This episode has a fair amount of meandering so be prepared. We discuss, among other things, cutting the cable cord and Carrie Fisher’s virginity.

Housekeeping starts at 1:15:00

The Big Lebowski “Fuck” count:

260 “fuck”s, 117 minutes of movie. 2.22 fucks per minute

Compare to Wolf of Wall Street:

569 fucks in 180 minutes for a 3.16 fucks per minute which is the top of mainstream films.

Goodwill Hunting and Scarface have 1.22 and 1.21 fucks per minute

The Grey has 1.3 fucks per minute (and is a Christian film, right?)

NIACW 180 For Your Eyes Only

For Your Eyes Only is a simpler Bond than Moonraker, one that Brother J and Drew did not like but Eric found refreshing.

The audio on this is a little wonky (but perfectly listenable) – Brother J’s new office is a bit echoey and for some reason Drew’s audio has an occasional “skip” in it.

Also Eric refers to Jack White as Jack Black and no one catches it.

NIACW 174 Signs

Signs is a scary little movie.  It has some plot holes to be sure but it holds up as a horror/sci-fi Hitchcockian thriller. Ignore the jerk director and enjoy it for what it is.

Warning: At 37:54 Eric tries to drop some knowledge about the movie. After hearing this, Brother J decides that the dropped knowledge doesn’t help the plot holes and actually hurts the watching experience. So there’s that.

You’ll also hear the sounds of hell and the sounds of dying cosmonauts (all tricks, no one was harmed in the making of these recordings – as far as we know) Housekeeping starts at 1:01:45, you’ll hear some train stories.

NIACW 172 2010:The Year We Make Contact

2010: The Year We Make Contact is definitely no 2001: A Space Odyssey… Right!

Which is a good thing, although Brother J and Eric still differ in opinions about the Kubrick classic.

First we discuss USA politics because it’s scarier than any horror movie and then we do some introspection about the flow of our podcasts lately.

This is the second of three in a row without Brother Drew who returns in two weeks for the Signs episode for Halloween.

NIACW 171 Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein is all of the atmosphere of Universal horror of the 30s and all of the schticky fun of Mel Brooks.

Eric and Jason talk a lot about Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, and Herve Villechaize.

Eric confuses hilarious Canadian Graham Clark with Python’s Graham Chapman.

They also talk about Black Christmas (1974) , Jaws, Phantasm , Arachnophobia , and Damnation Alley .

Jason talks about the Oregon coast and Christopher Lee.

Then at 36:30, we time travel to September of 2015 and some housekeeping Drew had about Mr. Robot and Misophonia.

NIACW 170 The Man With The Golden Gun

It’s back to Bond for a movie all the bros enjoyed. It’s not a great movie by any measure, but it’s fun.

We start with our own cold open where we encourage you to buy Dracula, presented by Fangoria Musick and Bleak December.

You might notice some lack of audio quality at first but it gets resolved and explained about 8 minutes in. We also get to hear Herve Villechaize sing (not in Venezuela)

The Godfather is mandatory viewing for fans of cinema and a great example of the theme: men become their father. The pacing is deliberate (slow in comparison to more recent films) but the depth and richness is impossible to deny. Cecil B. DeMille (1881 – 1959), the famous Hollywood film director and producer, is the subject of many legends. According to one famous story, DeMille once directed a film that required a huge, expensive battle scene. Filming on location in a California valley, the director set up multiple cameras to capture the action from every angle. It was a sequence that could only be done once. When DeMille yelled “Action!,” thousands of extras playing soldiers stormed across the field, firing their guns. Riders on horseback galloped over the hills. Cannons fired, pyrotechnic explosives were blown up, and battle towers loaded with soldiers came toppling down. The whole sequence went off perfectly. At the end of the scene, DeMille yelled “Cut!” He was then informed, to his horror, that three of the four cameras recording the battle sequence had failed. In Camera #1, the film had broken. Camera #2 had missed shooting the sequence when a dirt clod was kicked into the lens by a horse’s hoof. Camera #3 had been destroyed when a battle tower had fallen on it. DeMille was at his wit’s end when he suddenly remembered that he still had Camera #4, which he had placed along with a cameraman on a nearby hill to get a long shot of the battle sequence. DeMille grabbed his megaphone and called up to the cameraman, “Did you get all that?” The cameraman on the hill waved and shouted back, “Ready when you are, C.B.!”. from https://paulatohlinecalhoun1951.wordpress.com/2011/10/15/ready-when-you-are-c-b/

NIACW 156 On Her Majesty's Secret Service

With a new Bond, a crazy amount of reference to the old Bond, no spy gadgets to speak of, and a whiplash-inducing tone shift at the end On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is worthy of much discussion.

NIACW 144 Breach

Breach is a taut political thriller, short on action but high on tension. It’s a nice sorbet between Terminator courses. Along the way Brother J and Eric discuss Chris Cooper in Adaptation and American Beauty, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bronson Pinchot, Richard Kuklinski, Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole, The Black Tapes podcast, and The Star Wars Christmas Special. This is a Brother J and Eric only episode recorded in December 2015 so there’s a bit of discontinuity.

NIACW 141 T2 Judgment Day

p>T2 is a fantastic movie, groundbreaking at the time and it still holds up. That said, the brothers prefer the original to the extended version. NIACW 136 Road House

Road House is a fun movie, unabashed about what it is. First we revisit the band Trio and briefly discuss VW and the EPA. Road House talk starts about minute 7. During Road House talk the tangents go from the Expendables, Road House 2: Last Call, being SWATed, Compliance, Eddie Lawrence and The Old Philosopher (whom Eric calls the “Old Prospector”), the 12 Monkeys television show, the OODA loop, and Dr Dean Edell. Along with the usual feature The Six Degress of 2001 there is a new feature: Just Me or Heredity? Today’s ailment is a statin reaction… or is it?

NIACW 135 Goldfinger

Goldfinger is iconic and provides the template for the Bond movie formula but it is not a good movie. Drew has especially harsh words. Beforehand Drew recommends Star Wars The Force Awakens then Drew and J have their signature segment Cigar Talk. Goldfingering starts at 11:37 during which we tangent off into Catch-22, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Haruki Murakami, Flemming’s problem with lesbians, and why the gold standard is importance to understanding this movie.

NIACW 133 Idiocracy

Idiocracy is probably a better idea than it is a movie. Listen to all 3 Anderbros discuss this film and tangent off into all sorts of other things. Idiocracy talk runs from 15:00 to about 40:00. Afterward they discuss developing signature segments and then we hear from Mother Anderson. After that is some housekeeping which would usually have been edited out but it might be interesting to some to pull back the curtain somewhat. Oh and it devolves into tales of dentistry so fair warning there.

NIACW 132 Heist

2001’s Heist is a David Mamet film starring Gene Hackman. Nothing more needs to be said. Go see it then listen to Drew and Eric gush over it. Eric and Drew then discuss their mother’s influence over the film genres they love, Drew recounts an in-law story about teachable moments, and they talk about escape rooms. BONUS: Starting at 44:25 we have a long-ago recorded conversation between Brother J and Travis about the movie Ghost Writer after having listened to Drew and Eric discuss the film. Technical note: Jason was working with voice 1.5 after his surgery and Travis sounds like he was speaking from the moon.

NIACW 130 A Christmas Story

A Christmas story is a classic and Eric had never seen it prior to this year. It was also directed by the same guy who directed the original Black Christmas, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things, and Porkys. Brother J and Eric also discuss Christmas candy, boozy desserts, Basken and Robbins ice cream cake, and lots and lots of family nostalgia. Toward the end they drift off into politics since this episode was recorded just after the Paris terrorist attacks.

NIACW 108 Copycat

the 1995 thriller Copycat stands the test of time. Brother J and Eric also do some housekeeping and mention Vertigo, Independence Day, and Catch-22. Then Drew drops by and he and Eric discuss the bravery of Brother J, Minnie Ripperton and Maya Rudolph, Gwyneth Paltrow, the hopefully soon return of Diane to the podcast, bad Oscar winners, True Detective season 2, the Last Podcast on the Left, Ted Bundy, and cello musicians.

NIACW 107 Tiptoes

A bananas movie and an episode fraught with technical difficulty, that is our Tiptoes experience. Gary Oldman plays a dwarf in a movie that also stars Peter Dinklage and a gaggle of other little people. Brother J and Eric shake their heads.

NIACW 104 The Parallax View

Eric thinks the Parallax View is a masterpiece but Brother J politely begs to differ. I guess it depends on where we are standing in relation to the film. We also talk about social naivete, Lovecraftian crazy, lesbian wedding cakes in Portland, and Caitlin Jenner.

NIACW 102 Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit

Brother J thought Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit was a solid B movie but Eric finds it to be his favorite Jack Ryan movie. They then talk about Hannibal being cancelled, how Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey must smell, Tiptoes, Huey Lewis, Duets, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

NIACW 101 The Sum of All Fears

The Sum of All Fears is a great popcorn movie and a good reboot. It does right what Clear and Present Danger did wrong. Brother J and Eric discuss Ben Affleck, Gigli, and cigarette vending machines.

NIACW 100 Clear and Present Danger

Clear and Present Danger could have been a great popcorn movie but it tries to do too much and it is 45 minutes too long. Brother J and Eric also meander into talking about Oprah, The Duggars, the short-lived TV show Profit, the documentaries Shut Up and Sing and The Armstrong Lie, and government waste.

NIACW 099 Patriot Games

Patriot Games is a fun popcorn movie but seems quaint, what with the IRA being the terrorist threat. Brother J and Eric also recast Batman.

NIACW 013 The Hunt for Red October

After Jason offers free tech support to any listener, Eric and Jason discuss the 1990 hit film The Hunt for Red October.

During this discussion Eric cannot pronounce the word nuclear, Bella the dog continues to be the third host (because Dog knows she is not an invited guest), and Jason compares Alec Baldwin to the rest of the crew who portray Jack Ryan in subsequent films.

Then we go back into Tombstone talk (it is a film that casts a very long shadow) and various other chit chattery.

NIACW 098 Mud

Mud is a movie about the reliability of love set on the Arkansas River. Drew and Eric discuss the movie and along the way tangent to the darkness of the song Help Me Rhonda. We also discuss our differing views on the President on WTF, the definition of duck butter, and he and Brother J separately tell some Anderson stories including: yogurt face, eye cheese, microwaving inappropriate items, and celery casserole. The Mud talk takes us to about the one hour mark, everything else is gravy.

NIACW 097 The Grey

The Grey is an exploration of life and death set in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. And Liam Neeson punches a wolf in the face. Drew and Eric discuss the obvious lack of realism (Drew tells tales of the real Alaskan wilderness) but they both still enjoy the dark ride. We also discuss how this movie was marketed to specific groups with great effect.

NIACW 095.5 Top Secret

Top Secret is pure cheese. Aged cheese. Some might say stinky cheese. But it has a very young Val Kilmer singing and dancing. Due to household mechanical difficulties this is a mini-sode. That said it is still full of tangents.

NIACW 094 The Saint 1997

The Saint is cheesy fun. We rip it apart but both enjoyed watching it again. This is also the start of a three episode run of fairly cheesy Val Kilmer movies episodes. Brother J and Eric also talk about Dead Calm, Sliver, Cameron Diaz, Annie, OCD, bathmats, cutting meat, and not cutting meat.

NIACW 092 Hannibal

Hannibal is not a bad movie. It is not the masterpiece that Silence of the Lambs is but it is not the self-indulgent mess of Red Dragon We also discussed the podcasts “The Canon” and “You Must Remember This” and the book “Easy Riders and Raging Bulls: How the Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘N’ Roll Generation Saved Hollywood” by Peter Biskind. Also the short film “Cocktails and Dreams,” starring Chris Fairbanks and a Twitter account called “Hannibal at the Zoo.” Hannibal talk starts in earnest at minute 10.

NIACW 090 Red Dragon

Red Dragon is the all-star Brett Ratner redo of what Michael Mann handled masterfully in Manhunter. Eric finds some great stuff in a flawed movie. Drew finds a big corn-studded turd of a film. We also talk about the movie Spawn, actors doing awful accents, Paul Williams, and Strike Back
